Old Falls Street After the Buses Leave
Niagara Falls, New York gets a bad rap, and honestly some of it is earned. But Old Falls Street — the pedestrian zone between Main Street and the state park — has been quietly becoming a block worth visiting. Come in the evening when the tour buses have retreated and the mist from the falls drifts down the street like it can't quite leave.
Third Street Retreat pours local craft beer. Giacobbi Square hosts summer concerts. Even on quiet evenings the string lights and fountain give the space a warmth that the city's reputation doesn't prepare you for. The shops are local, the restaurants are unpretentious, and nobody's trying to compete with Niagara.
Walk to the state park entrance before dark when the falls get illuminated. Purple, green, gold — the colors change every few minutes, the mist catches the light, and the whole gorge turns into something between a cathedral and a nightclub. American side is better for this view than the Canadian side, and it's free.
